US to Enforce Visitor Registration Law for Canadian Travelers

Sunday, Mar 16, 2025

Canadian authorities have received notice that the United States will begin enforcing the Visitor Registration Law on Canadian citizens traveling between the two countries, according to a report by The New York Times. This law requires Canadians to register with US authorities if their stay in the country will be longer than 30 days.

US President Donald Trump announced that the rule would be more strictly enforced when signing executive orders regarding immigration during his first day in office. Previously, the Visitor Registration Law was not strictly applied to Canadians entering the US via the land border between the two countries.

Now, Canadian authorities have received notice that the law will be enforced. As a result, Canadians aged 14 or older traveling to the US for more than 30 days will need to register with US authorities at border control and provide their fingerprint.

This news comes after numerous statements and proposed legislative changes have been made by the Trump administration to tighten immigration control. Relations between Canada and the US have been strained over the past month, as both countries have applied successive tariffs on various imports and exports.

Despite the lax enforcement of this law in the past, travelers are urged to check carefully whether they will be required to register for their travels to the US from now on. Failure to comply with the law can result in criminal prosecution.
